The Ministry of Education's generative AI guidance (published 25 November 2024, updated 22 May 2026) asks schools to talk with staff about how AI is used, adopt a practical, educative approach and write a school AI policy covering purpose, principles, data privacy, professional development and review. It is clear that teachers remain central and responsible for student learning, that AI models are likely to be weak on matauranga Maori, te reo Maori and Pacific languages, and that generative AI is not permitted in NCEA external assessment.
The Ministry also warns that free tools may reuse what is typed into them, so personal, confidential or copyright material should never be entered, and that no personal information about anyone under 13 should be sent to an AI tool. Schools with consent to assess must have an authenticity policy that includes acceptable generative AI use.
Dan's keynotes give leadership teams and staff a way to make those decisions well: outsource the doing, not the thinking.
