What is changing for Irish schools

In October 2025 the Department of Education and Youth published "Guidance on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Schools" alongside Oide Technology in Education. It helps teachers and school leaders plan for AI in teaching and learning so that it is used safely, ethically and appropriately, draws on UNESCO and EU practice, and is a living document to be reviewed as research and practice develop.

The guidance asks schools to integrate AI into existing policies rather than write standalone ones, to set clear governance with a named person responsible for AI oversight, to review policies for GDPR compliance and assume that information entered into an AI system may enter the public domain, to have trained staff verify AI-generated content before it is used, and to give all staff professional development on the ethical and legal implications. It is explicit that teachers must have the final say on what is produced and used in the classroom. A revised edition is planned for 2026.

Dan's keynotes help boards of management, principals and staff turn that guidance into school-level decisions and a clear starting agenda.

Eurydice, Ireland: guidance on AI in education

Questions Irish school leaders are asking

  • Who is responsible for AI in our school? The guidance asks for named oversight; Dan's leadership session helps a principal and board of management decide who, and what that role covers.
  • How do we meet GDPR when staff use AI tools? The keynote sets out the data decisions only leaders can make, in plain language for a staff meeting.
  • What do we say to parents and the wider community? A clear, defensible position, built with the leadership team.
  • How do we give every teacher a usable rule? Thinking With Machines: outsource the doing, not the thinking, with examples for Irish classrooms.

Dan is yet to keynote on an Irish stage; his UK stages include Bett in London and the Surpass Assessment Conference in Leeds, and he has worked with councils from Falkirk to Ealing.

Where Irish education leaders gather

Events where Irish education leaders gather each year include the IPPN Principals' Conference, the NAPD annual conference, Féilte from the Teaching Council, and education-centre leadership events.
