What is changing for Australian schools

The Australian Framework for Generative Artificial Intelligence in Schools, released by the Australian Government Department of Education in December 2023 after endorsement by the country's education ministers, guides the responsible and ethical use of generative AI in school-based education. It is built on six principles: Teaching and Learning; Human and Social Wellbeing; Transparency; Fairness; Accountability; and Privacy, Security and Safety. States and territories, Catholic education and independent school associations have since been translating it into sector and school-level practice, from assessment integrity to the handling of student data and the choice of approved tools.

Dan's keynotes help leadership teams and whole staff make those decisions: what AI already does in classrooms, what only leaders can decide, and the human capabilities schools need to build on purpose.

Questions Australian school leaders are asking

  • Which of the framework's six principles should drive our first decisions? The keynote shows why Accountability and Teaching and Learning come first: a named leader, a clear position on where AI may and may not be used, and a plan for staff capability.
  • How do we protect assessment integrity without banning AI? Thinking With Machines gives every teacher one rule (outsource the doing, not the thinking) and classroom examples that keep the thinking with the student.
  • What should we tell parents? A clear, plain-language position that the school can defend, built in the leadership session that follows the keynote.
  • How do we build staff confidence rather than dependence on tools? The capability conditions Dan sets out in Leading What Comes Next.
